Two friends and I headed to Yellow Dog Tavern at 700 S. Potomac tonight for what we hoped would be a new favorite spot. The food was good, although a bit pricey. We got the chicken gyro, southwest cobb, and muffaletta panini. All three were good enough that we decided we'd be back. Then we got the bill. Never in my life have I wished that I was a food critic more than tonight. Our check was $125 - before tip! We had ordered Bacardi and Diet Cokes to drink. Our other friend had 3 Stella's. The Bacardi and Diet's ended up being $12 each. Between the two of us, we had 7. If you're struggling with the math, that's $84 in drinks between 2 people! Absurd! I asked to speak to the owner and she said that we ordered doubles. Humm.mm.mm. well, seems to me there was a misunderstanding - we ordered them in a tall glass. . . so that's a double . . . at $12 a piece? Am I in New York? The owner said all she could do was give us 10% off - so, we'd get a gift card for $12.50. That's a complete insult. As pissed as I was over this "misunderstanding" and considering we paid for at least her purchase of four 1.75 liters of Bacardi , she would have done much better to simply apologize for the "misunderstanding" and taken off the "doubles". I would have been happy to pay for 7 Bacardi and Diet's - not 14. And, I would have gone back. Not now. Be careful if you go - order beer - stay away from all mixed cocktails unless you're looking to break the bank. It's a shame. Since we go out at least twice a week, we were really looking for a new place to go. Where is customer service these days?

eh...the food is okay, but not consistent. these guys are also closed on most holidays. ugh. the service is okay at best. I've given yellow dog four tries and only had one good experience. too bad, there's good potential there.

Recently had a pretty good experience at the Yellow Dog. The food was slightly above average. The Fried oyster Po Boy special was quite good, except for the lousy bread that couldn't hold it all together. The small bite Mac and Cheese was to die for. I'd say it would even give the Wine Market's mac and cheese a run for it's money. The vegetarian side dish entree had some delicious elements to it, but it would've been nice to have some other more creative vegetarian offerings for Amy to choose from.

Enough about the food; the warmth and hospitality of the staff was what made it a great night out. Great beer selection and great televesion (Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations re-runs...), and great compnay from our bartender Beth. We're certainly looking forward to our next time back to the Yellow Dog.

I've dined at the Yellow Dog many times; brunch, casual dinner, upstairs formal dinner, drinks, etc. I've been beyond impressed with their competency, friendliness, uniqueness and variety of food offerings, and dedication of staff. I've eaten a wide array of their offerings, from plates containing salmon, to pan-cooked chicken, to tiger shrimp with grits. Each visit, I am happy with my meal: reasonably priced, creative and unusual. The portions are neither too big, nor too meager. The staff is welcoming and friendly. Outgoing and warm, yet still professional. The ambiance is great at Yellow Dog. The upstairs lends itself to fine dining, the downstairs bar area is always warm and cozy. I really enjoy the diverse patrons as well. Young and old, gay and straight, upper-crust and just plain crusty...everyone gets along well and I've shared some great conversation with perfect strangers. I would recommend (and have) Yello Dog to neighbors, friends, and colleagues, and will continue to frequent!

The first time I ate there I ordered a Reuben, which is a classic sandwich I love to try at new restaurants. It was the worst I have ever had, it came out cold and the corn beef was cut like a large hunk of ham. My husband ordered a tuna steak sandwich, and was also disappointed in how fishy it tasted. Neither of us really touched our food and I had to report to the waitress that we weren’t really happy with the quality, which I never do. They still charged us, which I guess I should have expected. Right then I decided we wouldn’t go back for food. Well . . . . my second time back I ordered a salad and again was not impressed. This is a cute corner bar in Canton. I hope they can pull it together a bit.

I got a special, the pulled pork, and it was decent. The pork seemed to be cooked well, and the fries that came with the meal mere decent. But just decent. With the sandwich prices coming in at $10, and a burger running $11 (add bacon and cheese and it's $14!), I was expecting much better. The girlfriend got Salmon, which she found pretty tasty, and her vegetables were cooked excellently. It's been about a week, so I can't remember exactly what she got. :-)

The ambience was ok. While it was cleans and modern-rowhouse'ish looking, otherwise I didn't find it that nice. Personally, I found it a bit stuffy and yuppy'ish.

Would I go back? Probably not. If I do head back I'll probably try a seafood dish with some of their fresher vegetables. While the food was decent, for the price I'd head over to Helen's Garden, Jack's Bistro or Annabel Lee's.
