One of the best meals of my life. The pork rillettes were a perfect way to start a meal. The cornmeal fried oysters were so flavorful, and very large. The grilled sweet breads were cooked perfectly, and all the accompanied sides were delicious. The waitress claimed the crème brûlée was the best she ever had, and I think that I will have to agree with her.

All of this for a fixed 35$ price. That's an extremely fair price.

Escargot or the grilled romaine to start never fail to please. Fall and winter entrees are hearty and satisfying; the lamb and duck are particularly excellent. Spring and summer entrees are bright and fresh. Wine selection is smart. Find out for yourself, but do yourself a favor and don't tell too many other people.

When you walk in the dining room you feel like you are in a restaurant somewhere south of Paris. (somewhere where there is a French Safeway Food and Drug nearby). The food was spectacular. Our party tried several different entrees and first plates and they were all uniformly excellent. The bread pudding for desert was to die for. I will keep coming back.

By the way, our waitress was wonderful.

We had reservations for 7:30, and we arrived at 7:40. We were politely greeted, and promptly seated. We were given a wine list, and the waitress returned a few minutes later and our water glasses were filled. We were than told the kitchen was starting to run low on things, and they only had one dish left of the Steak Diane, and the Bluefish. I was not overly thrilled to hear that, seeing we had a reservation, and it was only 7:45. We than gave our drink orders, the guys had beer, and Darcy and I had a go at the “House Made Red Sangria” ($6.00 per glass), which actually turned out to be rather good.

The waitress returned with our cocktails, and asked if we were ready to order. Turns out that there was enough selection on the menu that the Bluefish and Steak Diane didn't even cross our minds. I ordered the “Corn Chowder” ($7.50) and the “Duck” ($27.00), Nathan ordered the “Fried Green Tomatoes” ($9.00) and the “Chicken Maryland” ($25.00). Darcy ordered the “Tomatoes Salad ($8.00) and the “Rock fish” ($27.00), and Beej ordered “Fried Green Tomatoes” also, along with the “Pork” ($23.00).

Now once again I am thrilled to see another restaurant supporting the local movement. It really makes more sense, since the produce/meat is fresher and tastes better. The local product does also explain why our dishes cost a little bit more than average, due to the organic and better quality aspect.

While we were waiting for our appetizers, we were served some fresh bread and butter, and all the water glasses were refilled. While conversation ensued, I started to look around to get a feeling for the place. It was rather crowded for a small room, and I literally could touch the person sitting at the next table without reaching. The room was packed with a very diverse crowd, and I did remember seeing patio seating outside when we walked in. *Note to self, next time if the weather is good, ask to sit outdoors.* The "full house" really didn’t bother me to much, since we were out with friends, and entirely engaged in our own conversations the entire night, ignoring everything around us. They had the air conditioning properly adjusted to the large amount of people, and it was cool and relaxing. The one thing that did bother me though, was about every 20 minutes the lights would flicker. The third time it happened, I had to ask the table if it was “just me, or were things flickering”? I was assured they were seeing it to, and it was starting to give me a headache. So I just had another glass of Sangria to solve that problem.

Our appetizers arrived shortly after, and our waitress had another staff member help her carry everything out, so everyone was plated at the same time. (Points in my book).

My corn chowder was really good, and I ended up using a piece of bread to sop the little bit up I couldn’t get with a spoon. The picture did not do it justice, so I will just encourage you to go there yourself and try it! I was first rather hesitant of the polish sausage simmered in duck stock which was mentioned on the description in the menu. But I was quickly assured the kitchen staff knew what they were doing once I tasted it. The chowder had fresh corn, which I could confirm with a corn-string floating around. The smokiness of the sausage, had a nice savory compliment to the whole dish, without overwhelming it. Overall it also had a nice spicy tang to it.

Darcy’s Tomato Salad looked fresh and colorful.

In fact it was a rather large serving. It was topped with garlic aioli, and drizzled with grilled corn vinaigrette. I heard no complaints about the salad, and it appeared she was enjoying it.

The Fried Green Tomatoes had a beautiful presentation.

They were stacked on top of each other, and in between each slice there was fresh goat cheese and smoked Truck Patch Farm’s bacon. The vote was, the cheese was good, the bacon was excellent, but the Tomatoes were sliced a little too thick, and so they didn’t have a good even fried taste to them.Once we were all finished the wait staff cleared our plates, and shortly after brought out our main meal. All the dishes had great plate presentation and the portions were rather large.

Nathan’s “Chicken Maryland” was a pan fried breaded breast, placed on top of lardoons and a horseradish cream sauce, accompanied by a grilled banana on top, and a fresh biscuit on the side.

I was taken aback by the banana, but Nathan said it tasted wonderful with the chicken. In fact, he said the grilled banana was his favorite part of the meal. He gave me a piece of the chicken which was good, but the “horseradish sauce” tasted more like pot pie filling to me.

I had the Duck with a berry sauce, along with crisp fresh buttered green beans, and a bean mixture with potatoes.

The duck was cooked perfectly with a beautiful red in the middle; the sauce was a surprisingly tasty compliment to the duck. The green beans were a nice crisp contrast, and I ate all of them. The bean’s and potatoes were ok, but I was more interested in the duck.

Darcy had the Rockfish, which the fish itself was served in a separate dish.

The rock fish was baked and topped with crab imperial. It was served with a side of wild rice, and duxelles stuffed tomato. I personally am picky about my seafood, and think you shouldn’t mix them. If you order fish you should taste fish, not fish and crab. But that’s my opinion, and several people tend to disagree. She said it was good, and actually a lot of food.

Beej had the pork loin with smoked polish sausage, accompanied by lardoons and potatoes with “Robert Sauce”.

Apparently Beej didn’t like it at all, because when I paused from eating my own meal to ask him what he thought of his, it was all gone. ; )
He did say it was quite enjoyable, and the sausage and pork and a nice blend together.

Once our meal was finished, and the talk died down, we realized it was around 9:30 and we were the last ones remaining inside. (They close at 9:00.) We politely declined dessert, paid for our meal and left with a chorus of friendly goodbyes from the staff
